sustainable flooring

If you are looking for an environmentally friendly way to improve your home’s value and overall look, you have come to the right place! Investing in sustainable flooring is sure to give you just that, all at an affordable price. Here’s how to shop flooring sustainably!

What is sustainable flooring?

Sustainable flooring is flooring that uses environmentally friendly materials during its life cycle. This cycle includes a harvest, production, and disposal that reduces the damage done to the ecosystem. It is a common misconception that sustainable flooring is less sturdy than your generic options on the market; however, this is far from the truth. On top of creating healthier buildings, the materials that this flooring employs are just as, if not more, durable than what is commonly used in the U.S.

What type of flooring is most environmentally friendly?

There are a plethora of eco-friendly floorboards on the market. You just have to look in the right places! For example, bamboo flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners. Bamboo grows faster than trees and provides the same look and feel as generic oak or maple flooring.

Cork floors are another great option since they employ the bark of an oak tree as opposed to the rest of it. This leaves the trees standing tall while giving you a surface to stand on that naturally repels mold and other allergens.

Engineered hardwood is made through a combination of hardwood and plywood. Many manufacturers also use different recycled materials to make up the core of the floorboard. Overall, it is an excellent option if you want a hardwood that is nearly identical to what you will find in most homes. Due to its long lifespan and natural beauty, you are sure to be satisfied when you invest in this kind of flooring.

How can you determine if wood flooring was sustainably sourced?

Before purchasing a product, you should look it up on the manufacturer’s website or give them a call to confirm that it was sustainably sourced. Many companies will label their products as “green” if it is somewhat environmentally friendly; however, this does not mean that it is what you are looking for. “Green” products can sometimes start out eco-friendly but end up being non-recyclable or damaging to the air at the end of their lifespan. A truly sustainable floor is devoid of these flaws throughout its lifespan instead of just the production process.
