Due to their resemblance to each other many homeowners tend to confuse laminate and vinyl flooring. Although they share many similarities, these two floorings have a couple of key differences that may cause you to reconsider which one is right for you. What’s the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring? Let’s find out!
Laminate flooring is made up of wooden planks that have four layers. These layers include a vinyl backing, a core made up of fiberboard, a design layer that focuses on the aesthetics of the wood, and a transparent layer designed to withstand wear.
The core that resides in this flooring’s structure contains grooves that allow the boards to snap together. This eliminates the need for the floor to be physically attached to the ground through means such as glue. Instead, your home will have a floating floor that is entirely self-sufficient. This provides a level of convenience that you will not be able to get with other options on the market.
Like laminate flooring, vinyl also uses four different layers to make up its structure. While the option to glue it down certainly exists, many different vinyl planks feature the same groove and snap method that laminate flooring has.
Where the two kinds of flooring differ is in their materials. Vinyl flooring uses a plastic core, whereas laminate uses a wooden core. This plastic core waterproofs your vinyl, allowing it to survive damper and harsher conditions. Unfortunately, you will be sacrificing the flat and smooth surface that laminate flooring provides if you choose to go this route. Another consideration is that laminate flooring has a texture that closely resembles hardwood while vinyl does not.
Each flooring comes at the same price and will have the same lifespan, so it is ultimately up to you to weigh your options. Determine whether or not the look of the floor or the added water resistance is more important to you, and go from there. Both laminate and vinyl are excellent choices, so you are guaranteed a floor that will do its job well no matter what you choose.
