No matter what type of carpet you have, sometimes there’s no avoiding carpet burns. Tipped candles, wayward curling irons, and dropped matches just happen. Although small scorches in your carpet is a far better alternative to a home engulfed in flames, it is a little unsightly. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to repair minor carpet burns. Let’s take a closer look at the different carpet repair methods you can use.
Keep in mind that the following methods work best on small scorch marks. If you have iron marks on your living room floor or accidentally singed away half of your bedroom, these methods probably won’t work. If your burn is small enough, however, consider the following ideas.
● Sand or scrape the scorches away.
Did you know that you can clean a burn? If the scorching sits deep, this method will not work. However, if only the edges of the pile have been blackened, it probably will. To scrape the burn away, simply use sandpaper to gently scrub the scorched portion of the carpet. The burnt fibers will disintegrate and fall away from the untouched fibers. Vacuum up the ash, then use warm water and soap to wash the leftover fibers.
● Cut out the whole section of carpet and glue a carefully-measured replacement in its place.
If you have scrap carpet sitting around, try cutting a square around the burnt area. Lift the whole square of scorched carpet out, then replace it with a scrap of equal size and shape. Use glue to hold it down, then place a heavy book, brick, or another object on top to keep it flat while it dries.
● Snip fibers from another part of the house and blend them in with the burnt ones.
If the scorch is as small as some ash from a cigarette, try cutting the fibers with scissors. Then, cut a few clean fibers from a hidden corner of the house (such as a closet), and glue those in place of the burnt ones.
● When all else fails, move a piece of furniture.
Of course, if none of the above methods work and you need a solution fast, you can always rearrange your furniture to cover up the burn.
If the burn is big, you probably need to choose from one of two options.
● Call a professional carpet cleaning service.
In some cases, if the burn is surface-level, a professional carpet cleaner might be able to get some of the blackness out. However, try not to count on this too much. Large, deep burns typically need to be replaced, not just cleaned.
● Have some (or all) of your carpet professionally replaced.
Your next (and probably best) option is to call a professional carpet installer. It is possible that they can match the carpet and replace the burnt section alone. And if the rest of your carpet is outdated and dirty anyway, it might be a good idea to just replace all of it.
